Piercing Aftercare Guide
Proper aftercare is crucial for a problem-free healing process. Here you will find everything you need to know.
Congratulations on your new piercing! Proper aftercare is essential for ensuring that your piercing heals quickly and without complications. We have compiled all the important information for you here. Please read these instructions carefully and follow the steps diligently.
The healing of a piercing occurs in several phases. Each phase requires slightly different care. If you are unsure or notice any problems, do not hesitate to contact us.
First 3–4 Days: Disinfection
The most critical phase
In the first days after piercing, the wound is most susceptible to infection. Disinfect the piercing regularly:
- Disinfect with 40% or 70% alcohol, Octenisept, or iodine
- Disinfect 2–3 times daily
- Use clean cotton swabs or pads
Important: Do NOT use Merfen for more than 3 days! Merfen contains ingredients that can interfere with wound healing with prolonged use.
From Day 5: Cleaning
Gentle care instead of disinfection
After the initial disinfection phase, switch to a gentler cleaning method:
- Clean every 2 days with pH-neutral soap (e.g., Lactacyd, Lubex, or similar)
- Gently move the jewelry through the channel to loosen crusts
- Do NOT pull off crusts — they will loosen on their own through gentle turning and sliding
- Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water
General Rule: Hands Off!
The golden rule
The most important rule throughout the entire healing period:
- Touch the piercing as little as possible — only for cleaning
- Never touch with dirty hands
- Do not constantly fiddle with it — even if it itches or is tempting
- Always wash your hands thoroughly before cleaning
- No creams, makeup, or perfume near the piercing
Later Phase: Salt Soaks
Natural healing support
Once the acute phase has passed, salt soaks support further healing:
- Saltwater soaks promote natural healing (approx. 1 tsp sea salt per 250 ml warm water)
- Seawater is ideal — a beach vacation during healing is actually beneficial
- For redness or irritation: apply Betadine soap or tea tree oil (diluted)
- Soak the piercing for 5–10 minutes in the salt bath
Important Note About Disinfectants
Disinfectants are cytotoxic — they kill not only bacteria but also healthy cells that are needed for healing. Therefore, use disinfectants only during the initial phase (first 3–4 days) and then switch to gentler methods (pH-neutral soap, salt soaks).
