Microdermal / Dermal Anchor

What are microdermals?

Microdermals, also known as dermal anchors or single-point piercings, are a fascinating piercing type that fundamentally differs from conventional piercings. While a classic piercing has an entry and an exit point, the microdermal has only a single visible point on the skin surface. Beneath the skin sits a small anchor (the so-called foot or base) that carries the decorative top.

The great advantage of microdermals: They can be placed on almost any flat body location where a conventional piercing would not be possible. This opens up entirely new possibilities for body decoration, from individual accents to elaborate patterns of multiple anchors.

How does a microdermal work?

A microdermal consists of two parts:

  • The anchor (base/foot): A small, flat titanium plate (approx. 6 to 7 mm) with holes that is inserted under the skin. The holes in the anchor allow the tissue to grow through the anchor and thus fix it permanently.
  • The top: A decorative element that is screwed onto the anchor and is visible on the skin surface. The tops are interchangeable and available in numerous designs: crystals, balls, opals, flat discs, geometric shapes and more.

During insertion, a small pocket is created under the skin using a special instrument (dermal punch or needle), into which the anchor is slid. The procedure is quick and completely pain-free with local anaesthesia. Within a few weeks, the tissue grows through the holes in the anchor and fixes it securely.

Popular placements

Decollete / Chest

A single crystal on the sternum or a pattern of multiple anchors. Particularly elegant with strapless outfits.

Face

As an anti-eyebrow below the eye, on the cheek or at the temple. More subtle than a through-piercing.

Finger / Hand

A microdermal on the ring finger as an alternative to a finger ring. Particularly popular as a "piercing ring" for couples.

Neck / Nape

Individually or in a row along the neck or nape. Very elegant and eye-catching at the same time.

In principle, microdermals can be placed on any flat body location with sufficient subcutaneous tissue. Locations with heavy friction (e.g. belt line) or frequent mechanical stress are less suitable, as the rejection risk is significantly higher there.

Prices

Quantity Price
1 Microdermal CHF 100 / 120 (with anaesthesia)
2 Microdermals CHF 200 / 220 (with anaesthesia)
3 or more CHF 260 / 280 (with anaesthesia)

All prices include titanium initial jewellery (ASTM F136). Decorative tops can be purchased separately.

Healing & care

The healing time is 2 to 3 months. During this period, the tissue grows through the holes in the anchor and fixes it permanently. The following care instructions should be observed:

  • Clean twice daily with sterile saline solution. Carefully lift the top and clean underneath.
  • Do not turn or pull the top. Mechanical stress can loosen the anchor.
  • Choose clothing that does not catch on the microdermal. Knitwear and towels are particularly treacherous.
  • When sleeping, ensure no pressure is applied to the microdermal.
  • Do not apply plasters directly over the top, except for protection during sports.

Removal

Should you decide at any point to have the microdermal removed, this is a simple procedure that can be performed in our studio. With local anaesthesia, the removal is pain-free. The anchor is carefully loosened from the tissue pocket and extracted. A small scar remains, which is usually barely visible and continues to fade over time.

Top change

The decorative top can be changed at any time without removing the anchor. This way, you can vary your look as you wish: From a subtle crystal to a striking opal or a coloured ball. Simply come to our studio — we are happy to change the top for you.
