Daith / Migraine Piercing

What is the Daith Piercing?

The Daith piercing (pronounced "Dath") sits in the horizontally running cartilage fold directly behind the tragus, in the innermost area of the ear. This cartilage fold, medically known as the crus helicis, forms a natural pocket in the ear. The piercing passes through this cartilage from inside to outside and therefore sits protected and discreetly within the ear.

The Daith piercing owes its special significance to the fact that it is located precisely at an important acupuncture point. This point has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries to treat headaches and migraines. The piercing permanently stimulates this point, which in many patients leads to a significant reduction in migraine attacks.

Effect Against Migraine

At XS Piercing Basel, we rely on a scientifically based method for placing the Daith piercing. Unlike many studios, we do not rely solely on visual orientation but use a special measuring device to determine the electrical resistance of the skin. This allows us to locate the exact acupuncture point on the ear, because a deviation of just a few millimetres can make the difference between effectiveness and ineffectiveness.

The experiences of our clients paint an impressive picture:

  • Significant improvement: A large proportion of our clients report a drastic reduction in migraine attacks, both in frequency and intensity. Some experience no migraines for months after getting the piercing.
  • Moderate improvement: Some clients report milder attacks that are shorter in duration and respond better to medication than before.
  • No worsening: In no case has the piercing led to a worsening of migraines. In the worst case, the situation remains unchanged, and you have an aesthetically appealing piercing.

Our Method

The procedure for the Daith piercing at XS Piercing Basel differs fundamentally from that in conventional studios. Our multi-step process ensures that you achieve the best possible result:

  1. 1
Consultation: We discuss your migraine history, frequency and intensity of attacks, as well as previous treatments. This allows us to assess whether the Daith piercing can be a meaningful addition for you.
  2. 2
Point localisation: Using our resistance measuring device, we precisely determine the acupuncture point on your ear. We mark the exact position and explain to you why this particular spot is optimal.
  3. 3
Local anaesthesia: On request, we administer a local anaesthetic so that the procedure is completely painless. Especially with the Daith piercing, which passes through relatively thick cartilage, many clients appreciate this option.
  4. 4
Piercing & jewellery: The actual piercing is done quickly and precisely. We insert high-quality titanium initial jewellery (curved barbell or ring) that remains in the piercing throughout the entire healing phase.

Healing & Aftercare

The healing time for the Daith piercing is typically 6 to 10 weeks. Since the piercing passes through relatively thick cartilage, healing can take a little longer than with thinner cartilage tissue. Please follow these aftercare guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Clean the piercing twice daily with sterile saline solution (NaCl 0.9%). Avoid alcohol-based disinfectants as they can delay the healing process.
  • Do not touch: Only touch the piercing with freshly washed hands and do not turn the jewellery unnecessarily. Every touch can introduce germs.
  • Headphones: Avoid in-ear headphones in the affected ear for the first 4 to 6 weeks. Over-ear headphones can also exert pressure and should be used with caution.
  • Sleeping position: Try not to sleep on the side of the new piercing. A travel pillow with a hole can be very helpful here.
  • Check-up: Come to us for a check-up after 2 to 3 weeks. We will review the healing progress and give you further tips if needed.

“The migraines are not completely gone, but the attacks are less intense and I need strong medication much less often. Plus, the piercing is beautiful. I do not regret a single moment.”
