Lip Piercings

Lip Piercings Overview

The lip area offers an astonishing variety of piercing placements. Each position has its own name and character, from subtle to striking. All lip piercings have in common that they possess both an external component (visible on the skin) and an internal component (on the oral mucosa). The good blood circulation in the mouth area generally ensures faster healing than many other piercings.

Labret Piercing

Position:
Centre below the lower lip
Healing:
4 - 6 weeks
Price:
CHF 100 / 120
Jewellery:
Labret stud

The labret piercing sits centrally below the lower lip and is the classic among lip piercings. It gives the face a distinctive yet not too flashy accent. The name "labret" derives from the Latin "labrum" (lip) and is also the term for the typical jewellery: a stud with a flat back plate inside the mouth and a visible ball or decorative top on the outside.

Monroe & Madonna

Position:
Side above the upper lip
Healing:
4 - 8 weeks
Price:
CHF 100 / 120
Jewellery:
Labret stud

The Monroe piercing sits on the left side above the upper lip and imitates the famous beauty mark of Marilyn Monroe. The Madonna piercing is the counterpart on the right side, reminiscent of Madonna's distinctive mole. Both variants create an elegant, feminine look, but are of course suitable for all genders.

The placement must be chosen with care so that the piercing looks natural and sits at the right spot on the upper lip line. A well-placed Monroe/Madonna looks like a permanent, sparkling beauty mark.

Medusa (Philtrum)

Position:
Centre above the upper lip
Healing:
6 - 8 weeks
Price:
CHF 100 / 120
Jewellery:
Labret stud

The Medusa piercing, also called a philtrum piercing, sits exactly in the centre of the groove (philtrum) between the nose and upper lip edge. It accentuates the Cupid's bow of the lips impressively and is a particularly aesthetic piercing that symmetrically complements the face. Combined with a labret piercing, it creates the popular "Cyber Bites" look.

Snake Bites

Position:
2x side below the lower lip
Healing:
4 - 8 weeks
Price:
CHF 140 / 160
Jewellery:
2x labret studs or rings

Snake Bites consist of two symmetrically placed piercings, one on each side below the lower lip. They resemble the fangs of a snake, hence the name. This double piercing creates a striking, symmetrical look and can be worn with labret studs or small rings.

Spider Bites

Position:
2x close together, one side
Healing:
4 - 6 weeks
Price:
CHF 140 / 160
Jewellery:
2x labret studs or rings

Spider Bites consist of two closely spaced piercings on one side of the lower lip. The small distance between both piercings creates the impression of a spider bite. They can be worn particularly effectively with small rings.

Angel Bites

Position:
2x side above the upper lip
Healing:
6 - 8 weeks
Price:
CHF 140 / 160
Jewellery:
2x labret studs

Angel Bites are the combination of Monroe and Madonna: Two symmetrical piercings above the upper lip, one on each side. They form the counterpart to Snake Bites and create a harmonious, symmetrical look. Particularly with delicate crystal tops, they produce an elegant style.

Healing & Care for Lip Piercings

Lip piercings require special care as they have both an external wound (skin) and an internal wound (oral mucosa). The good news: the oral mucosa heals particularly quickly since it is constantly moistened with saliva, which has natural antibacterial properties.

  • External care: Clean twice daily with sterile saline solution. Gently soak crusts.
  • Mouthwash: Rinse with alcohol-free mouthwash or saline solution after every meal and after smoking.
  • Diet: Prefer soft foods in the first few days. Avoid spicy, sour and hot foods as they can irritate the wound.
  • No kissing: Avoid kissing and oral contact for the first 2 to 3 weeks to prevent infections.
  • Smoking: Ideally refrain from smoking in the first few days, or at least rinse thoroughly afterwards.

Dental protection

The back plate of the labret stud rests on the inside of the lip against the gums or teeth. To avoid tooth enamel damage and gum recession, we recommend using the smallest, flattest back plates possible and regular dental check-ups. At XS Piercing Basel, we pay attention to the correct length of the initial jewellery to minimise unnecessary friction.
