What is the Christina piercing?

The Christina piercing is a surface piercing that is placed on the mons pubis — exactly at the point where the outer labia (labia majora) meet at the top. The piercing runs vertically through the skin of the mons pubis, with the upper ball of the jewellery visible on the skin surface.

The Christina piercing is named after the person on whom it was allegedly first performed. It is a purely aesthetic piercing without a functional component — meaning it does not enhance sexual sensitivity, as it sits above the clitoral region and has no contact with erogenous zones.

Many wearers appreciate the Christina piercing as elegant, discreet body jewellery that can be visible in a bikini or with low-sitting clothing — depending on preference, a deliberate eye-catcher or a hidden detail.

Characteristics as a surface piercing

As a surface piercing, the Christina differs fundamentally from classic piercings that pass through a tissue fold (such as the clitoral hood or labia piercing). It pierces flat tissue that does not naturally form a «pocket» for the jewellery. This brings specific characteristics:

  • Increased rejection risk (migration): The body tends to treat surface piercings as foreign bodies and slowly push the jewellery outward. This risk is higher with Christinas than with classic intimate piercings.
  • Longer healing time: Surface piercings take significantly longer to heal — for the Christina piercing typically 6 to 12 months. Complete healing can take up to a year or longer.
  • Mechanical stress: The mons pubis is constantly subjected to stress from clothing, belts and body movements. Friction and pressure can significantly impair healing.
  • Special jewellery required: For surface piercings, specially shaped surface bars are used, whose flat feet reduce the risk of rejection.

Jewellery options

For the Christina piercing, special jewellery forms are recommended that minimise the rejection risk:

  • Surface Bar: The recommended jewellery for Christinas. Surface bars have a flat, right-angled shape with wide feet that lie parallel beneath the skin surface. This design significantly reduces pressure on the tissue and minimises the migration risk. The posts are made from implant-grade titanium (ASTM F136).
  • Curved Barbell: As an alternative, curved barbells can be used that adapt to the natural body curvature of the mons pubis. They are somewhat easier to handle but offer less protection against migration than surface bars.
  • Decorative ends: Both surface bars and curved barbells can be fitted with various designs on the visible ends — from simple balls to crystals, opal or gemstone tops.

Clothing and daily life

An important factor with the Christina piercing is friction from clothing. The mons pubis is in a zone that is constantly touched by waistbands, belt buckles and underwear. This has implications for daily life:

  • During the healing phase: Wear high-waisted, loose trousers or skirts. Avoid low-rise jeans, tight leggings and belts that press directly on the mons pubis. Soft cotton underwear is recommended.
  • Sports activities: Activities with strong hip movement or friction in the lower abdomen area (e.g., cycling, horse riding, sit-ups) should be limited during the healing phase or performed with protective clothing.
  • After healing: Most wearers can wear all clothing styles again after complete healing. However, it is still advisable to watch for signs of irritation when wearing tight clothing for extended periods.

Healing & care

Healing the Christina piercing requires patience and consistency. With a healing time of 6 to 12 months, it is one of the longest-healing intimate piercings:

  • Cleaning: Clean the piercing twice daily with sterile saline solution. Avoid aggressive cleaning or the use of alcohol-based disinfectants that dry out the tissue.
  • Do not touch: Avoid turning, pushing or touching the jewellery unnecessarily. Touch only with freshly washed hands.
  • Minimise friction: Wear loose clothing and ensure that no constant pressure is applied to the area.
  • Be patient: Even when the piercing appears healed externally, internal healing may still be ongoing. Only change the jewellery after consulting your piercer.
  • Monitor migration: Regularly check whether the jewellery has changed position. If increasingly more jewellery becomes visible through the skin, contact us immediately.

Care tip

Do not use body lotions, creams or oils in the piercing area during the healing phase. These can clog the piercing channels and promote inflammation. Stick to pure saline solution and clear water.

Frequently asked questions

Why does healing take so long?

The Christina piercing is a surface piercing that passes through relatively thick tissue on the mons pubis. Surface piercings generally heal more slowly than piercings that pass through thinner tissue folds, as the body perceives the foreign material more strongly as an intruder. Additionally, the area is constantly subjected to mechanical stress from clothing and movement, which further slows healing.

How high is the rejection risk?

As a surface piercing, the Christina piercing has a higher rejection risk than conventional piercings. The body can recognise the jewellery as a foreign body and slowly push it outward (migration). With the right jewellery (surface bar made of titanium), correct placement and careful care, this risk can be minimised. Signs of rejection include increasingly visible jewellery through the skin or thinning of the tissue over the jewellery.

Can I wear tight trousers with a Christina piercing?

During the first months of the healing phase, we strongly recommend avoiding tight trousers, jeans and belts, as the pressure on the piercing can hinder healing and increase the rejection risk. After complete healing, many wearers can wear tight clothing again, but should continue to watch for excessive friction.

Does the Christina piercing have a functional effect?

No, the Christina piercing is a purely aesthetic piercing. Due to its placement on the mons pubis, it has no contact with the clitoris or other erogenous zones. It sits above the clitoral hood and serves exclusively as decorative body jewellery. If you want an intimate piercing with a functional component, we recommend the clitoral hood piercing (VCH).
